Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) geldt in Amerika en daarbuiten als een van de grootste schrijvers van de twintigste eeuw. Hij schreef onder andere de romans Afscheid van de wapenen, Voor wie de klok luidt en En de zon gaat op, en de verhalenbundel Mannen zonder vrouw.
